Mixing Alcohol and Antidepressants
I can’t count the number of times I’ve had dinner out with a friend whom I know has been taking an antidepressant. And for the life of me, I can’t get my head around it.
With a diagnosis of chronic clinical depression, I gave up alcohol many years ago knowing it, in any form, was a depressant.
Please don’t misunderstand; I drank wine and scotch with the best of them in my 20’s and 30’s. But as my depression continued to be an issue and I was medicated to relieve it, I couldn’t rationalize having even one glass of wine when I knew that the chemistry in my brain was out of balance.
It may be too easy to join in and just have one glass of wine. But aren’t we asking too much of our brain chemistry to right itself on medication while feeding it precisely what we know can’t benefit us?
Let me know your thoughts.
