thinking_personNow We Can See Depression!

In the past we have relied on other’s perceptions of behavior, both of themselves or someone in their day-to-day interactions. But now we have a way to actually see the blood flow in the brain, which can tell us about the activity—or lack of it—that may be occurring.

Dr. Daniel Amen, a psychiatrist, has probably done more assessments in this area than anyone else. The study is known as SPECT, or Single Proton Emission Computerized Tomography. This sophisticated nuclear medicine study looks directly at the cerebral blood flow and at brain activity, or metabolism. A camera takes photos we can now view to compare a well-functioning brain to a depressed brain.

I am in no way suggesting or endorsing Dr. Amen and his work, but if you want to see the images, go to to see these images. Fascinating!
